Story

The story

For three years Hazel has tried for a baby, enduring herbal remedies, ovulation stimulation and a doctor's assurances that her body is the problem. Her husband Gideon Tarrant sends her up Hallow Peak in the Kestrel Range to kneel and pray at every step through a blizzard, and her family urges her to fast and put up with the pain.

Near the summit, her smartwatch buzzes: Gideon's heart rate is spiking, and a video syncs to the family cloud album. In a delivery room he is cutting the umbilical cord of a child born to her best friend, Amanda Crowley, surrounded by Hazel's own parents and her brother Jordan Dunbar, all of them determined that Hazel must not find out.

The ribbon Gideon tied to the prayer tree carries a wish for Mandy's safe delivery, and the album keeps filling with proof that the folic acid her mother pressed on her was birth control all along. What they owe her, she means to take back piece by piece.

Opening excerpt

In our third year of trying for a baby, Gideon Tarrant insisted that I go to the snowy peaks of the Kestrel Range to pray for a child.

"The old folks say that if a wife climbs Hallow Peak and kneels to pray every three steps, heaven will send her a baby."

Because of that, I faced the blizzard in the bitter subzero cold and knelt my way up from the foot of the mountain.
