His Last Chance, My Last Goodbye

For seven years Claire Bennett has loved Ethan Walker, but lately she has been raising her stepsister Chloe for him instead of being his partner. When a patient's family member slaps her at the hospital, she texts Ethan that she needs him within twenty-four hours or they are done. He never replies. Instead, Chloe posts photos of cake, coffee and a shoulder pressed against Ethan's, and the group chat fills with their plans for movies and holidays.

Claire stops waiting. She asks Dr. Rachel Brooks to send her on the hospital's overseas medical volunteer program, with a flight leaving in three days. Then Ethan's social media post appears, praising his tough little rose over a bouquet that was really for Chloe's competition win. When Ethan and Chloe turn up at the hospital to collect her for a screening, he notices her swollen face only long enough to scold her for ruining the evening.

Claire has already decided to let go, but Ethan cannot see how exhausted she is, and Chloe leans on him instead of her. The question left hanging is whether Claire's last goodbye will finally be heard.
