Story

The story

Three months after Jolene Newman was thrown out of the family home into a snowstorm, her brother Caleb is hospitalized with leukemia. Her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Newman, need a bone marrow donor and 138 thousand dollars, and her sister Ruby, a cheerleading captain and influencer, wants to use Jolene's education fund. None of them know Jolene died the night they cast her out, her head striking a stone beneath the snow.

As her family searches for the sister they call ungrateful, Jolene drifts unseen beside them, watching Ruby post about her online and her parents argue over money and ballet lessons. At Jolene's school, a guard says she has no parents, only a grandmother who passed away six months ago.

Her family wants her back only to save Caleb, while the truth of her death lies buried under the snow.

Opening excerpt

My sister, Ruby, texts me. "Caleb is sick, so get the hell back here for a bone marrow transplant. Mom and Dad will stop holding a grudge against you for stealing money."

Dad calls me a few times, but they go unanswered. He curses, "How dare she! She didn't even bother calling since we kicked her out a few months ago!"
