Story

The story

A week before her wedding, Xandra Sutton brings her father to the hospital where her fiancé, Yale Xavier, works, hoping for an endoscopy he has long needed. Yale makes them wait for hours, then gives their appointment to his godmother, Helen Grant, and her daughter, Paige Grant, telling Xandra to wait her turn like everyone else. That evening he dines with the Grants instead of coming home.

When Xandra objects, Yale turns on her, and Helen slaps her in her own home while Yale shields the two women. Her father, who paid Yale's tuition from his small breakfast place, urges her to keep the peace and go ahead with the wedding.

Xandra must decide whether to marry a man who treats her father as a stranger, while her father's worsening stomach trouble presses on her mind.

Opening excerpt

Dad had gotten up extra early to shave and put on a gleaming white shirt and a new pair of shoes. Clutching his numbered ticket, he asked me quietly, "If Yale's busy, we don't need to see him. We shouldn't hold him up."

I patted his arm. "Don't worry. I made an appointment. It wouldn't be holding him up."

He'd been up since five without anything to eat. By eleven, his legs were trembling from standing. I texted Yale Xavier.
