Story

The story

At Boston Logan Airport on Labor Day weekend, a surgeon named Luke is stopped at the gate by his girlfriend Tess Shepard and her ever-present friend Tyler Shaw. Seeing his boarding pass for Seattle, Tess accuses him of tracking her and hijacking her trip. Tyler snatches the pass, tears it up, and shoves Luke, while Tess's friends Peyton and Danielle jeer that he is a liar. Tess takes his phone and moves to cancel his booking.

Luke is not following them. A priority transfer has summoned him to Seattle, where Arthur Hawkins of the Hawkins family is dying of severe acute obstructive cholangitis, and only Luke's pioneering endoscopic protocol can save him. He remembers a past life in which this same scene destroyed him: the missed surgery, the lost license, his parents' death, and Tess's swift engagement to Tyler.

This time he will not beg. He has already called the Hawkins family to report that he is being detained, and the surgical window is closing fast.
