The story
Vivian Montgomery is a mimic. On the afternoon the Montgomerys bring her home, she studies their logic and turns it back on them: when her mother Eleanor insists a bed is just a bed, Vivian claims the master suite; when her brother Ethan urges her to yield, she asks for his platinum Patek Philippe. Madeline, the adopted daughter who has held the household's affection for twenty-four years, offers tearfully to leave, and Vivian cheerfully offers to book the moving van.
As an introductory gala approaches, Eleanor softens, choosing Vivian's gown and speaking of years spent searching for her, and Vivian lets herself believe the return may not be hollow. But Madeline arrives at the reception in a matching black gown wearing the Montgomery emerald pendant meant for the biological daughter, and the family dismisses Vivian's objection as a minor detail.
Vivian does not argue. Minutes before the receiving line opens, she walks out of Arthur's study wearing the vintage platinum Patek Philippe from his safe.
