Avery has loved Ethan since she was fifteen, when he was nearly beaten to death protecting her. Now his wife, she has spent years bending to his every word, hoping some corner of his heart might be hers. Then she learns he wants her to donate a kidney to his lover, Tessa — and that Tessa's aim is to make her lose her baby.

When Avery demands an explanation, Ethan's cold answer drives her to sign the divorce papers. But the betrayal runs deeper: Tessa sends her the address so she can hear Ethan with her own ears, and he shields Tessa while calling Avery a shameless woman who dirtied his hands. Left on the pavement, Avery is helped by a stranger, then met at home by Ethan's assistant, Mr. Yang, with the papers she refuses to sign.

She searches until she finds Ethan at a bar, surrounded by friends who all claimed they did not know where he was.
