Story

The story

For five years, Hugh Wadlow has believed his daughter Elsa was abducted, printing missing-child flyers and swallowing pills to sleep. Then his wife, Felicia McCoy, stops him with the truth: Elsa was never taken. Felicia gave the child to Gordon Parker, her first love, after he fell into depression over losing his own daughter.

When Elsa finally returns, she is polite but distant, calling Gordon every morning and night and asking to go home to him. Felicia insists Elsa chose this and that Hugh should let her go, even suggesting they have another child. Hugh is left to decide what remains of a father's place in a daughter who no longer wants him.

A story of a family torn apart by a long-kept secret and a love that may no longer be wanted.

As I head out again to put up missing-child flyers around town, my wife, Felicia McCoy, stops me.

Instead of pulling me into her arms to comfort me like she used to, she looks at the miserable state I'm in and finally tells me the truth.

"Elsa wasn't abducted. I gave her away."

My voice is hoarse. "What did you say?"

Felicia looks a little guilty, but only a little.
