The Armor She Stripped Away

On graduation day, Nolan turns down Haley Ward, and three wrestlers corner him in a storage shed behind the bleachers. A serrated blade gouges his lower back, leaving a jagged keloid he hides for ten years beneath a heavy medical lumbar brace, strapped on like armor even around Tessa Hayes, the woman he has been with for three years.

Then, in an abandoned industrial photo studio, a masked man holds steel to Tessa's throat and demands Nolan bare the scar to a camera. He strips the brace away—only to find the kidnapping staged. The masked man is Austin Keller, Tessa's college best friend, filming footage for his clinical psychology thesis, and the blood on Tessa's throat is theatrical silicone.

When Nolan calls the police, Tessa tears the phone from his ear, and Austin produces a consent form bearing a forged version of Nolan's signature. The sirens close in as Nolan stands his ground, refusing to apologize and kicking the dropped memory card out of reach.
