Bled Dry by the Doctor

Nora Hayes has spent seven years banking her own blood, month after month, because her rare dual-erythrocyte chimerism makes any unmatched transfusion almost fatal. Then she learns that Austin, the doctor she is to marry, has signed away every unit of that reserve to Maisie, the five-year-old daughter of his childhood friend Brooke, without ever asking her. When colleagues warn him that Nora is five months pregnant and could bleed to death in labor without a reserve, he answers that they can postpone having a child.

Anatomy scan report in hand, Nora schedules a termination and ends the call in which Austin insists he would have made the same call for any patient. At home she finds Brooke on their sofa in Nora's own slippers and Austin carrying dinner, arranging for mother and child to stay two or three months while Maisie recovers. Their wedding is set for next month.
