That night, I received a text from an unknown number. It was a video file.

I clicked play.

The shaky footage showed Preston sitting in a VIP booth at an upscale club. His collar was unbuttoned, and he looked heavily intoxicated.

Chloe was sitting pressed against his side, pouring him another glass of scotch.

Someone off-camera yelled over the music:

“Preston! You’re getting married tomorrow! What are you doing out drinking?!”

Preston let out a dark, cynical laugh.

“What wedding? She refuses to sign the prenup. There’s no wedding.”

“Women are so incredibly greedy these days.”

“They stick around while you’re broke for a few years, and suddenly they think they own your soul.”

A different voice asked: “But didn’t Maya help you build the company?”

Preston swirled the amber liquid in his glass, his tone laced with absolute arrogance.

“She was there. I’m grateful.”

“But a man can’t live in the trenches forever.”

“Maya belongs in the past. Chloe understands the man I am today.”

Chloe looked down, a coy smile playing on her lips.

“Preston, aren’t you worried Maya will actually leave?”

Preston reached over and affectionately pinched her cheek.

“She’s not going anywhere. She’s been with me for eight years. Her entire identity is tied to me.”

“I’ll buy her a bag, say a few sweet words, and she’ll come crawling right back.”

The booth erupted in laughter.

The video ended.

I stood alone in my dark living room. My hands and feet were completely numb, frozen solid.

Eight years ago, in the dead of winter, Preston’s landlord evicted him.

We sat on the concrete stairs of his apartment building, freezing.

He buried his face in his hands, his voice thick with tears.

“Maya, am I just a worthless failure?”

I shoved the wad of cash I got from pawning the bracelet into his freezing hands.

“Preston, you are going to make it.”

“I believe in you.”

He held me in that freezing stairwell and cried. “Maya, I swear to God, everything I ever have will be yours.”

He had everything now.

But he decided I only "belonged in the past."

My phone buzzed again. Same unknown number.

This time, just a single text.

[Ms. Davis, stop being naive. He threw you away like a cheap suit a long time ago.]

I didn't reply.

I saved the video and forwarded it directly to Olivia.

[The corporate asset transfers, the prenup, the video evidence. Compile all of it.]

[I want him to watch his empire burn.]

[I’m not threatening to leave. I’m already gone.]

A few hours later, the front door unlocked. Preston walked in.

He dropped a velvet Cartier box onto the coffee table.

When he saw me standing in the living room, he immediately stiffened.

“Where did you go today?”

I ignored him, walking straight into the master bedroom to grab my suitcase.

Preston’s temper flared. He flipped open the velvet box.

Inside was a massive, blindingly bright solid gold bangle.

“I had my assistant buy this today. It’s custom. It’s worth ten times more than your old one.”

“If you’re really that obsessed with the one Chloe has, I’ll tell her to give it back to you.”

I looked at the gaudy, heavy bracelet and actually smiled.

“Ten times more?”

Preston frowned, confused. I looked him dead in the eye.

“Preston, you still don’t get it, do you?”

“I didn’t want the gold. I wanted you to remember what it meant.”

His face froze.

I pulled out my phone and tapped play on the video.

His own arrogant, drunken voice echoed through the quiet apartment.

“Maya belongs in the past. Chloe understands the man I am today.”

All the color completely drained from Preston’s face. He looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Who sent that to you?!”

I stared at him.

“Does it matter?”

“YES!”

He lunged forward, desperately trying to snatch the phone from my hand.

I took a swift step back.

“Let me guess. You were drunk? You didn’t mean it?”

“Or are you going to tell me I’m overreacting again?”

Preston’s lips trembled.

“Maya, I was wasted. I didn’t know what I was saying.”

“It was just stupid locker-room talk.”

I nodded slowly.

“It’s funny. Every time you shatter my heart, it’s just an ‘accident’.”

“But every time I bleed, the pain is very, very real.”

His eyes went red.

“Don’t leave. We’re going to the courthouse tomorrow, just like we planned.”

“I’ll rip up the prenup. I’ll transfer the penthouse back to my name.”

“I’ll fire Chloe tomorrow. I swear.”

I grabbed the handle of my suitcase.

“Don’t bother. I already listed this condo with my broker.”

Preston’s head snapped up.

“You’re selling the condo?! This is our home!”

I rolled my suitcase toward the front door.

Preston chased after me, grabbing my wrist in a vice grip.

“Maya, if you walk out that door tonight, you are going to regret it for the rest of your life.”

I looked over my shoulder at him.

“The only thing I regret is selling my grandmother’s bracelet to pay your rent eight years ago.”

He looked like he had been physically struck. His grip loosened just a fraction.

I ruthlessly pried his fingers off my wrist, one by one.

“Preston, the second you let another woman write our prenuptial agreement, this stopped being my home.”

When the elevator doors began to close, absolute panic finally broke through his arrogant facade.

“MAYA!”

I didn't look back.

The moment I stepped out of the lobby into the cool night air, my phone buzzed.

A text from Preston.

[Maya, I made Chloe delete the clauses you hated. Stop throwing this tantrum. If you come back tonight, we can still get married tomorrow.]

I stared at the glowing text. I actually felt bad for him.

He was so deeply delusional he truly believed he could just hit 'undo' and put me back in my box.

A second later, Olivia called.

Her voice was incredibly grim.

“Maya, I need you to hold onto that physical copy of the prenup. Do not lose it.”

My grip on my suitcase handle tightened.

“Why? What did you find?”

Olivia paused for two heavy seconds.

“I was doing a line-by-line review of the addendums. I realized a page was missing from the standard draft.”

“Missing?”

“Yes.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“It wasn't a standard liability clause. It was a Beneficiary Transfer Agreement.”

I stood on the sidewalk, the cold wind biting through my coat.

“Explain it to me.”

Olivia’s voice was dead serious.

“If you had signed that agreement and married Preston tomorrow… and if, within three years, you filed for divorce citing Chloe Sterling as the reason…”

“Your 25% equity in the company would legally be classified as a ‘voluntary penalty forfeiture’.”

“And the designated beneficiary to receive your shares…”

She didn't need to finish the sentence.

I already knew the answer.

But hearing the name spoken out loud still felt like a knife twisting in my gut.

“Chloe Sterling.”
