Walking Their Own Paths

On the evening of his fifth wedding anniversary, Jack Brook sits alone in a restaurant, waiting for a wife who has told him she is away on business. A waiter's slip of the tongue leads him to the room next door, where he finds Hazel Fresco, his wife, surrounded by people he knows — including Alex Clare, the best friend who claimed to be working that night. Hazel is holding a young man named Bennett Oldham, and the guests are toasting a birthday that has taken priority over the couple's anniversary.

As Jack listens, the life he thought he had comes apart. Hazel has been seeing Bennett for three years, and the infertility he has blamed himself for is a lie she and Alex built to cover her tracks. Confronted, Hazel offers no remorse, only cool explanations about first love and boredom, while Bennett pleads to be forgiven for standing in as a younger version of Jack.
