Story

The story

For seven years Viola has stood beside Damian Caruso, the Don of the Caruso family, swallowing every slight and cleaning up his messes. At last he agrees to the wedding at St. Patrick's Cathedral, before the mafia elders of New York and New Jersey. Then a phone call about Bella, the orphan of a servant whose father did the family a great service, stops the vows. Damian postpones the wedding and walks out, leaving Viola to face the laughter and the betting board alone.

At the Long Island estate, Damian has installed Bella in Safehouse Seven, the coded fortress he once promised was theirs alone, and given her the thornbird brooch that belongs to the Don's wife. Old Anthony and the elders call it a test of her grace; Damian calls it a small thing she should overlook. Viola stays calm, hands back his coat, and says nothing.

But a business card from the Gambino family, slipped to her at the wedding, waits in her pocket. When she drives to Safehouse Seven and finds Bella wearing the set made for her, her patience is nearly gone.

Opening excerpt

Inside St. Patrick's Cathedral, I stood at the aisle in a lace gown, surrounded by the most dangerous mafia elders from New York and New Jersey. Three minutes, and the Don would take his vows and take over the rest of my life.

Then he answered a phone call. "Bella got into a car accident. In Brooklyn."

Bella. The orphan of a dead servant. The "life debt" Damian owed her. Her needs always came before mine. When a gun was to my head, he was at her therapy.
