Story

The story

Ginny rushes back overnight when her best friend Siobhan Coventry goes into labor, only to discover the baby's surname is Kessler—the surname of her husband Vincent, who has supposedly been away for two years on a classified project. At the hospital she finds Vincent at Siobhan's bedside, and her own mother carrying the newborn to them, beaming.

The people she loved most have deceived her together. Locked out of her mother's house by a new fingerprint lock, Ginny learns her mother has long favored her goddaughter Siobhan, and sees Vincent's message asking that she be kept away from the hospital so Siobhan can rest.

She offers to agree to a divorce and let them be together, and when Vincent finally comes to her, two years of longing collide with a hatred more complicated than she ever imagined.

"Have you decided on the baby's name yet?" I asked.

Her smile stiffened unnaturally for a moment. "Leonard Kessler. We'll call him Leo."

"Kessler?" I stared at her in surprise. "I thought you said the baby would take your last name. Is his biological father's last name Kessler?"

She gave me a vague hum before quickly changing the subject. "Ginny, I've been craving the wraps from that place in the college town."

I nodded, forcing my doubts aside, and went out to buy one for her.
