The story
At forty-seven, Arthur lies dying of late-stage lung cancer, and he chooses that moment to confess a devastating secret: the daughter he and his wife Nina raised, Aubrey, is not Nina's biological child. He switched the babies at birth, giving Nina his sister-in-law Helen's daughter while keeping the truth buried for over two decades. The child Helen raised, Sophie, was left brain-damaged by a childhood fever that went untreated in time.
As Arthur's health fails, Helen installs herself in their home, coldly scheming and treating Sophie with open cruelty while exchanging loaded glances with a business associate named Mark. Nina watches it all with icy composure, revealing that she has long known more than anyone suspects. With Arthur's remaining months slipping away and inheritance talk poisoning every gathering, the question of whose daughter Aubrey truly is threatens to unravel everything.

At forty-seven, my husband Arthur was on death’s door, and he chose that moment to confess.
He told me that the daughter we had raised, Aubrey, was not my child. She was his sister-in-law’s. He had switched our babies while I was lost in a postpartum haze, moments after giving birth.
