Story

The story

Noah's wife, Colonel Evelyn Vance, insists their son Aaron must become a man, so she deploys him to a peacekeeping mission in the Middle East over Noah's objections. Aaron returns in a small, flag-draped box, his remains only fragments, handed to Noah by Major General Diana Thorne. His last call, begging his father for help as captors tortured him, plays endlessly in Noah's mind.

When Noah finds Evelyn's post praising her first love Christopher and his daughter Cece, who wears Aaron's Medal of Honor, he files a report against his wife with the military court. News hails Cece as a hero while Aaron lies shattered and forgotten. Evelyn calls, ordering Noah to delete his posts and dismissing Aaron's death as a lie.

At the villa, Noah packs his son's photograph, tears Evelyn from it, and prepares to leave. Outside, Christopher arrives, his hand resting on Evelyn's waist, and she demands to know where Aaron is. Noah finally confronts her about the favoritism she has never shown their son.

Opening excerpt

“I was on the front lines when I was just a teenager,” she’d scoffed. “Look at him. Does he even look like a man to you?”

Our son came back with the Medal of Honor. The price was his life.

I went to find her, carrying the box with his ashes. But when I arrived, I saw her latest post online: a photo of her first love, Christopher, and his daughter, Cece.

The caption read: [A living Medal of Honor recipient. A credit to our guidance.]

In the photo, Cece was wearing the medal that belonged to my son. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just filed a report against my wife with the military court.
