Story
The story
When Artie spots a stack of crucial expense reports left on the copy room printer by the intern Topher, he does not quietly hand them back. Instead he tags the CEO and the Director of Finance in the company Slack channel, asking Finance to come count the pages in person. In his previous life, that small kindness cost him everything: a missing twenty thousand dollar receipt, a false accusation of embezzlement, his permanent contract, his five thousand dollar commission, and finally his life.
This time Artie refuses to be the scapegoat. Topher weeps in Donovan's office, the security badge logs place Artie in the copy room, and Donovan demands he open his bag. Artie refuses, and the office turns on him. Colleagues whisper, his commission is revoked, and his desk is moved to a dark corner.
Artie stays calm, waiting for the audit he has already set in motion.
Opening excerpt
When I saw the intern Topher leave a stack of crucial expense reports unattended on the copy room printer, I didn't gather them up.
In my previous life, I had done the nice thing and handed the papers back to him. Half an hour later, our boss screamed because the ledgers didn't match.
