Story

The story

Driving home for the holidays, a soldier just back from military service is rear-ended on the highway when a speeding Maybach races down the emergency lane and slams into his reinforced Volkswagen. The Maybach's owner, Gabriel, storms out shouting that he is the law in Jacksboro City, smashes the car with a baseball bat, and demands compensation, boasting of ties to the Traffic Bureau chief.

Gabriel's companion jeers as he threatens to break the soldier's legs and calls in reinforcements, while bystanders warn that Gabriel, second boss of Jenkins Construction, is notorious for crushing anyone who crosses him. Undeterred, the soldier insists the fault is Gabriel's alone.

When Gabriel pins the car against the guardrail above a cliff and claims his brakes failed, the soldier must decide how far he will let a man who believes power outranks the law push him.

Opening excerpt

It was the holiday season and I was on my way home when the traffic on the highway came to a standstill. Suddenly, a Maybach came speeding down the emergency lane and slammed right into my car.

The driver jumped out and started yelling, jabbing his finger in my face.

“Are you blind?! Don’t you know cars turning should yield to those going straight?”
