Story

The story

The day her husband, Julian, is declared brain-dead, his student Lily begs May not to give up on him. May has lived this before: she sold everything to keep his body functioning, only to learn his death was a charade to escape a malpractice settlement and run away with Lily. In her first life, the victim's family pushed her from a cliff.

Now May sees clearly. Before the hospital board and reporters, she produces Julian's notarized Anatomical Gift Donation Form, once a publicity stunt, and announces she will honor his final wish by donating his body to the medical school. As Lily protests and the Dean of Medicine embraces the gesture, May watches Julian's fingers twitch beneath the sheets and pretends not to notice.

If he wakes, he is exposed as a fraud; if he stays still, he becomes a specimen. May intends to make sure his last wish is fulfilled.

Opening excerpt

In my first life, I did everything she asked. I sold our home, our cars, everything we owned, just to keep his body functioning. I only discovered later that it was all a charade—a meticulously planned fake death so he could escape a massive malpractice settlement and run away with her.

I was the one who paid the price. The victim's family, in their grief and rage, pushed me from a cliff. My body was never found.
