Story

The story

Chase Murphy has been married to Jessica Stanton for three years when she announces she is infertile and brings home two three-year-old twins, Billy and Maisie, from an orphanage. He raises them as his own for fifteen years, until they push him down the stairs, revealing they are the children of Jessica and her first love, Troy McPoland.

Chase wakes on the day Jessica first introduces the twins and asks him to adopt them. This time he refuses to be the fool, and he answers with a surprise of his own: a five-year-old girl named Olivia, whom he introduces as his daughter. Jessica is furious, but she has grown used to living off his income and cannot afford to lose him.

As the household settles into its new shape, Jessica schemes to give Billy and Maisie the best of everything while pushing Olivia aside, and Chase quietly refuses to let her have her way.

Opening excerpt

I raise them as my own, investing everything I have into their lives. But in return, they push me down the stairs without a second thought.

"Now our real dad can finally be with Mom."

In that split second, the truth crashes down on me. These aren't just any children—they belong to Jessica and her first love, Troy McPoland.

When I open my eyes again, I find myself transported back to the day Jessica first introduces the children into our lives.

This time, I'm done being the fool raising someone else's family.

"Come on, call him Daddy."
