Amidst the Rain in New York

At the Colonetti family banquet in New York, Lena stands among the girls waiting to be chosen. Victor, the heir, is to announce his fiancée and present the family heirloom, a lily brooch. As an illegitimate daughter, Lena knows that without the brooch she will be sent to Chicago for an arranged marriage. Victor, who once promised to marry her, pins the lily brooch on Emily instead, calling her kind and gracious, and Lena becomes the joke of the evening.

The next day Lena boards a flight to Chicago alone, but Victor grounds every flight heading there. Emily clings to his arm beneath the chandelier, and when Marcolo, a mafia playboy, corners Lena, Victor slaps him away yet still leaves with Emily. Ten years of trust shatter as Lena faces the fate she cannot escape.
