Story

The story

Brenda has kleptomania, and she has always used her daughter Lily as her scapegoat. As a child, Lily was the one accused when Brenda slipped candy into her pockets; at her own wedding, she was blamed for a stolen gold necklace. Condemned online as a thief, Lily jumped into a river in despair.

She wakes back at the moment Brenda first accused her of stealing candy. This time, Lily speaks up in her small voice, exposing the green onion and the hair clip, and the neighbors turn on Brenda instead. But Brenda's fury only grows, and at Aunt Sarah's wedding she goes bigger: the ring box is empty, and Brenda wails that Lily stole the rings.

Sarah pulls Lily behind her, yet Brenda insists on her lie. Lily must save herself, even if she cannot save her mother.

Opening excerpt

But she's terrified of getting caught, so she's always used me as her scapegoat.

When I was little, she'd stuff candies from the grocery store into my pockets.

When the clerk caught us, she'd immediately turn on me: "Are you that greedy? I'll stitch your mouth shut when we get home!"
