Joanna once helped design the safety protocols for a disaster-training program. Now her husband Carter runs it, and he locks their four-year-old daughter Lily, who has a congenital heart defect, inside a fire simulation chamber for stress-tolerance training. When the smoke floods the chamber and Lily's heart rate spikes past 190, Joanna begs Carter to open the door. He refuses, saying the simulation must finish and that Lily needs to learn calm in a crisis.

Then Valerie, a colleague, calls over the intercom claiming a panic attack. Carter leaves Joanna pinned at the console and goes to Valerie, insisting the automated system will keep Lily safe. The override is locked, the main lights cut out, and Lily collapses. By the time Carter returns with Valerie in his arms, the paramedics have stopped CPR. He calls Lily's death a necessary sacrifice for the research, and Joanna, bloodied and hollow, decides to teach him what sacrifice truly means.
