Story

The story

For five years, Yvette has built a life with her fiancé, Theo Montague. Together they travel to see the aurora, move into a house in Northshire, and plan a wedding everyone envies. Yet at every happy moment, Theo murmurs that they are still one step short of perfect. Yvette assumes it is simply the perfectionist in him.

Then Theo's most prized former student returns from abroad. He posts a photo of himself meeting her at the airport, and the woman beside him looks eerily like Yvette, sharing at least 70% of her features. When Yvette finally meets her face to face, Theo cannot even say who she is. The one thing he has always been missing, Yvette realises, is a person.

At home, the truth cuts deeper: the student's name is Octavia Everleigh, and October has always been Theo's favourite month. Yvette must now decide what her five years with him truly meant.

Opening excerpt

It's our fifth year together, and I accompany my fiance, Theo Montague, to see the aurora he has always yearned to see. Fortune favors us that night as vivid green lights stretch across the snow-covered plain.

He wraps his arms around me from behind and suddenly murmurs, "It's beautiful. Too bad we're still one step short of perfect."
