Story

The story

Pregnant with her second child, Audrey has watched her husband Mark hire a young nanny, Jenna, to help with their daughter Sophie. But when Sophie shoves her down the stairs, Jenna rushes to comfort the girl instead of calling for help, and Sophie begs her father to divorce Audrey and marry the nanny. Mark's eyes flicker with pleasure at the idea.

Recovering in hospital, Audrey finds a photo from Sophie's parent-teacher conference: Jenna posing as Mark's wife, their family complete without her. Mark has married into Audrey's money, yet lets the school believe Jenna is his wife. When Audrey confronts him, he blames her for working too much, and Sophie demands he divorce her as promised.

Audrey has carried this family on her own. Now she must decide what to do with a husband who chose the nanny and a daughter who wants a new mother.

After I got pregnant with our second, my husband hired a nanny to "help with my workload."

But when I fell down the stairs, she didn't call 911.

Instead, she rushed to comfort my daughter, the one who had pushed me.

“It’s okay, Sophie, sweetie. Don't be scared,” the nanny cooed, stroking her hair. “Auntie Jenna knows it wasn’t your fault. Mommy’s just gotten clumsy since the new baby came along.”
