Story
The story
Anya believes Dominic is about to marry her, until the moment they reach City Hall. There he confesses he already has a child and cannot sign the certificate, insisting she should care more about him than a piece of paper. He explains that another woman must be his wife because her family once saved his parents, and that his family allowed Anya in only on the condition that he keep the child.
But the paper is not a formality to Anya: it is her life, and the only thing that can protect the child she carries. A cold system voice warns her that her mission has failed and she has forty-eight hours left. When she pleads for the certificate, Dominic calls her selfish, then offers her everything except the name of wife.
Following him to Tulip Hills, Anya sees another woman run into his arms. At home she holds out a pregnancy test and asks whether he will give the child a name. He accuses her of faking a pregnancy, and she tells him he never trusted her.
Opening excerpt
Just as we arrived at City Hall, Dominic leaned in and whispered in my ear.
"Actually, I have a child."
He looked at me, his expression earnest.
"This certificate... I can't give it to you. But I can give you everything else."
I stared down at the marriage license application in my hand, my mind blank. It took a long moment before I could force out the words. "Why... why didn't you tell me before?"
