Story

The story

After a year undercover inside an illegal mining cartel, investigative reporter Julian returns home to find his wife Chloe pregnant with another man's child. Their own baby was aborted so she could give her terminally ill first love, Carter, an heir to carry on his bloodline. When Julian confronts them, his in-laws, Richard and Martha, side with Carter and have Julian jailed for a week to cool down.

Freed but discarded, Julian is then hunted down by the cartel after his father-in-law exposes his undercover identity to its ruthless boss. Beaten, tortured and humiliated for weeks, he is finally pulled out when his newsroom colleagues press the feds to intervene. His heart now ash, he signs papers to deploy overseas as a frontline war correspondent.

As Chloe's family dotes on the newborn and plans its one-month party, Julian prepares to leave them all behind, a parting gift in mind.

Opening excerpt

The day my wife gave birth, my mother-in-law held her hand and cooed, "Chloe, don't worry.
