Story

The story

Emma's roommate Chloe has decided that Emma's family is her own. After a few weekends at Emma's house, Chloe begins calling Emma's parents Godmother and Godfather, insisting she is their daughter and Emma's older sister. When winter break arrives and Emma's parents plan a family cruise, Chloe refuses to go back to her own home out of state. She cries, claims she cannot get a ticket, and follows the family to their car on the day the dorms close. Emma's soft-hearted father lets her in.

At home, Chloe cooks, cleans, and flatters, winning Emma's parents' praise while quietly pushing Emma aside. She even angles for a spot on the family trip, and when she cannot have one, resentment flickers. Then Emma slips on body wash outside the bathroom and injures her ankle and knee, unable to walk. Chloe's concern quickly turns to hints that someone else should take Emma's place on the cruise.

Emma is left hurt, sidelined, and unsure how far her roommate will go to claim her family.

Opening excerpt

When my roommate, Chloe, found out, she immediately called my mom, crying hysterically.

"Godmother, did you forget you have another daughter?"

After my mom politely turned her down, she threw a massive tantrum in our dorm.

"How can parents be so biased?! We are both their daughters, why do they treat me so differently?!"

I was stunned.

She had just crashed at my house for a few weekends, and now she genuinely believed she was my parents' biological child.
