Story

The story

Cory Wiggins is an esports player on the eve of a national final, training past midnight with his team. When his father calls to say his mother is unconscious in the hospital and a critical notice has been issued, Cory refuses to come home, telling him his phone will be off during the competition. His father explodes, and his brother Gary Wiggins urges him to return, but Cory hangs up and switches on Do Not Disturb.

At the venue the next morning, a grieving crowd led by his father confronts him. His uncle Dwayne Wiggins denounces him to reporters, revealing that his mother, a retired factory worker, was injured at a construction site while trying to help him buy a house. Cory's cold words provoke a slap from his father, and Gary smashes the custom keyboard Cory treasures.

As his father kneels and begs, Cory wavers for an instant, but the thought of the championship trophy steels him. He declares he will not give it up.

Opening excerpt

On the other end of the line, my dad cries hysterically. Amid his sobs, he tells me that my mom is currently unconscious in the hospital, and that the doctor has issued him a critical notice. Apparently, my mom's funeral is being prepared in advance, so my dad wants me home immediately.

As I stare at the match-up diagram of the final round of the national-level competition as well as the seven-figure prize money, I reply icily, "I'm not going home. I must participate in the final round tomorrow. During the competition, my phone will be turned off.
