Story

The story

Avery is an underage girl who minds her family's liquor store and motel in a remote town near a national park. One night, Vaughn Sterling, a wealthy, dangerous-looking man, arrives for a bottle of craft bourbon but decides to stay the night. When he learns she is not yet eighteen, he leaves, then returns with shopping bags of food and gifts, and quietly keeps watch so she won't be alone in the dark.

Vaughn extends his stay with a platinum credit card, tutoring Avery so she can earn a perfect score in Physics. But her father, a gambling man who forbids her from school and beats her when he loses, returns home and flips the table of food she cooked in thanks, then takes a cane to her.

Avery has found safety in the one man everyone warns her about, and the man who calls himself her guardian is drawing closer than a guardian should.

Opening excerpt

When I was eighteen, Vaughn Sterling, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, hooked his finger into the back tie of my dress and dragged me out of hell.

"You guys don't want her?"

"Fine, I'll keep her."

Later on, he trapped me against his chest, deliberately tempting me:

"I'm getting sick of hearing you call me 'Uncle Vaughn.' Want to change it?"

I suppressed my frantically beating heart: "C-change it to what?"

The man's voice carried a wicked smile:

"We're not related by blood anyway. What do you think?"

My first meeting with Vaughn Sterling was far from pleasant.
