Story

The story

On New Year's Day, Ryan is asked by his childhood friend Willa Scott for the passcode to the new house he bought for 220 grand. When he opens the door, he finds more than a dozen strangers inside, among them Willa's boyfriend Sebastian Judd and Sebastian's mother Meredith Judd.

Willa tells the crowd that Ryan begged on his knees for a place to stay, and she and Sebastian mock him, calling him shameless and worse, while the guests treat him as a burglar and threaten to beat him. Sebastian insists the house is his, and when Ryan moves to call the police, Willa smashes his phone and claims he gave her the house last month to settle a debt.

Ryan warns them that trespassing and spreading obscene rumors can bring one to five years in prison, but Willa only offers to introduce him to Sebastian's aunt, Eve Judd, and the intruders refuse to leave.

Opening excerpt

I thought she was planning to bring a housewarming gift, but when I opened the door, I froze in shock. There were more than a dozen people inside.

She walked over with a smile before giving me a subtle look.

"Ryan, what are you doing here? Come on in. You're just in time. You're lucky enough to catch our family gathering."

I stood there in stunned silence. Before I could even ask what was going on, her boyfriend suddenly spoke in a mocking tone.
