Story

The story

On Christmas Eve, after cooking dinner for her in-laws, Nathalie is stopped at the door by her husband, Blaine Ramsey, who suggests her mother should stop treatment. His mother, Rosalia Ramsey, and sister, Aviana Ramsey, call the illness a bottomless pit and a burden, while Blaine stays silent. Nathalie leaves for the hospital anyway.

Her mother, Deborah Simmons, raised her alone and paid for the house they all live in. When Blaine's family later faces a crisis of their own, Nathalie quietly arranges to sell that house, treating them as outsiders.

A story of a family's coldness and a quiet reckoning.

Opening excerpt

"Honey, maybe we should tell your mom to stop treatment."

On Christmas Eve, after spending the day cooking dinner for my in-laws, I was getting ready to head to the hospital and keep my mother, Deborah Ramsey, company through the night.

Just as I reached the door, my husband, Blaine Ramsey, stopped me.

It took me a moment to process what he'd said. I turned and stared at him in disbelief.

"What do you mean?"

He lowered his head and stayed silent.
