The story

Claire Rivers keeps returning to the Nightshade Tattoo Studio, where the cold, taciturn artist Henry Kane works in black gloves and a mask. She deliberately picks at her healing tattoo again and again, reworking the design just to see him, though her strict upbringing has never let her confess what she feels.

By her third touch-up, strange comments begin scrolling before her eyes, claiming Henry is an ancient ferocious beast in human form, icy on the surface but burning with possessiveness, afraid his violent nature will frighten her away. When she blurts that she wants the tattoo on her lower back, his hand on the machine jerks still, and the air freezes.

As he cleans her raw, self-inflicted wound, his touch is impossibly gentle while his voice stays cold, and the watching comments insist his composure is close to breaking.
