Story
The story
A daughter returns with her mother, Evelyn, to clear out the old countryside house, and finds a hidden leather suitcase holding an airplane ticket, an unopened letter, and a photograph of a stranger. On the back, four words: "I'm waiting for you." The discovery pulls her back twenty-five years, to an airport where a young Evelyn, in a trench coat, is about to run away rather than be married off to Liam Miller, her father's "honest" apprentice.
In that terminal, the daughter urges Evelyn to choose the open world she has never seen, the world Adam Grant speaks of, instead of a life circling a stove in one alley. But Liam arrives with hot buns and quiet pressure, and then word comes that her father has collapsed. At his hospital bedside, the old man begs her to marry Liam before he dies, and Evelyn's resolve begins to shatter.
Caught between a father's dying wish and the freedom she craves, Evelyn must decide whether she owes her life to anyone at all.
Opening excerpt
Years later, when my father had an affair, she simply moved into a different room to sleep. It was then that my grandmother truly saw my father for what he was, privately cursing my grandfather for being a senile old fool who had ruined their daughter's life. Only after I was grown and independent did she decisively file for divorce.
When she and I moved back to the old countryside house to clear out her belongings, we found a leather suitcase hidden under her bed. Inside were an airplane ticket, an unopened letter, and a photograph of a man I'd never seen before.
