Story
The story
For three years, Chloe and her best friend Vivian have been married into the Sterling family, until the brothers' childhood sweetheart returns. The two women plan to run away together, but on the night before their escape, Vivian leaps from a high-rise and dies. When Chloe calls Caleb, Vivian's husband, he refuses to believe her, mocking the news as a game and turning back to another woman's voice. Liam, Chloe's own husband, greets her grief with the same cold disbelief.
Chloe scatters part of Vivian's ashes into the sea, then returns to the Sterling estate, where both brothers confront her. Caleb demands to know where Vivian is, certain she has found another man, while Liam drags Chloe away and warns her to stay away from Vivian. Refusing to accept that her friend chose to die, Chloe resolves to uncover the truth behind the fall, and she tells Liam she wants a divorce.
Opening excerpt
My best friend and I had promised to run away together, but the night before our escape, she jumped from a high-rise building.
I called her husband, Caleb, but he only sneered: "Sister-in-law, my brother said if she jumps off a building today, are you going to jump into a river tomorrow?"
...
The mockery pierced my eardrums, and my heart sank inch by inch.
I looked at Vivian lying in a pool of blood, my voice hoarse. "Caleb, I'm not joking. Vivi... is really dead."
A disdainful scoff came through the phone.
