Story
The story
Evelyn is kidnapped by a cartel the day before her wedding and taken to a remote island off Colombia. Her fiancé, Ethan Cole, a former Navy EOD specialist, launches a secret mercenary rescue, but when the cartel straps explosives to her chest, he carries her trembling best friend Sophia onto the chopper instead, leaving Evelyn behind.
For six years Evelyn is held captive, surviving four pregnancies that end in loss. A fifth pregnancy, a boy, brings her to a mainland hospital, where she contacts an undercover DEA agent and helps bring the network down. She returns home pregnant and broken, only to find Ethan with Sophia at the same hospital.
Sophia claims Evelyn staged her own kidnapping for Ethan's shares and that the scandal killed his grandmother. As Evelyn protests, pain tears through her abdomen and blood runs down her leg. A nurse warns that the next of kin says she is allergic to anesthesia.
Opening excerpt
My fiancé, Ethan Cole, a former Navy EOD specialist, planned a secret mercenary rescue.
But the plan went to hell.
The cartel leader strapped a vest of explosives to my chest. And as the rescue chopper’s blades beat the humid air, Ethan looked at Sophia, her body wracked with tremors, and then he looked at me, a human time bomb. To calm her, he didn’t hesitate. He swept Sophia into his arms and carried her onto the helicopter.
Leaving me behind to wait for a rescue that never came.
For six years, I was the cartel kingpin’s property. I carried four of his children. None of them survived.
