Story
The story
At a gathering, Austin Barnes says he fell for her eyes. Later she finds her stepsister Vivian Sinclair's secret account, where Austin confesses he still loves Vivian and calls his girlfriend a stand-in for those similar eyes. For three years Vivian has logged their love; Austin flew to her when she was sick and met her on Valentine's Day. He tells commenters he has no feelings for his current girlfriend and would choose Vivian if she were willing.
The narrator grew up overlooked: her father divorced her mother for Vivian's mother, sent Vivian abroad while refusing her own dream of studying overseas. She pinned all her hope for love on Austin, only to learn she was his second choice. As strangers online defend and condemn the pair, she is left to face how thoroughly she has been used.
Opening excerpt
At the gathering, someone asked Austin Barnes what had made him fall for me.
He answered without much thought. "Her eyes. They're pretty."
The friends around us pounced on it right away. "They say when you fall for someone's eyes, you've fallen for their soul. You're done for."
I ducked my head, embarrassed, but Austin said nothing. He only drank, one glass after another.
That night I scrolled onto my stepsister's secret social media account. The post was a close-up of a pair of eyes, the caption plain.
