Story

The story

After her daughter is kidnapped and found dead, Faye discovers that her husband, Luke Harrison, has another family. On the very day their daughter was taken, Luke was out shopping and playing with his son, Mason. He had ignored the teacher's calls and never picked the girl up. At the funeral he showed only a flicker of grief before returning to his usual cold distance.

Picking up her daughter's ashes, Faye sees Luke in a park, holding hands with a little boy who calls him "Dad." The child is five, a year younger than the daughter he neglected. When she finally confronts him, Luke says he has already lost one child and cannot lose another. Faye asks for a divorce.

That night Luke comes home with pastries and excuses, then rushes out again because Mason has a fever. Faye's last hope dies beside their daughter's urn, and she resolves to let him go.

Opening excerpt

The man who could barely bring himself to smile in front of our daughter was warm and affectionate toward another child—a boy.

In fact, on the day my daughter was kidnapped, Luke was out shopping and playing with his son.

The teacher’s calls went unanswered, and it wasn’t until days later that the police found her lifeless body.
