Story
The story
Cass has spent her life guarding Beckett, the man her mother once took in as a boy on their Montana ranch. When the Beckett estate catches fire, he sends her into the flames to retrieve Amber's keepsake and pillow, never mentioning that an unmarked car had already shattered her leg and cracked her ribs before she arrived.
Outside, Beckett holds Amber close and speaks through a megaphone, ordering Cass to hurry and warning her not to come home if Amber's things burn. Amber sobs that the keepsake holds her mother's ashes, and Beckett halts the hoses, leaving Cass trapped as half the mansion collapses around her.
Bleeding and burned, Cass crawls toward the window, clinging to a secret Beckett does not know: she had just heard their baby's heartbeat for the first time.
Opening excerpt
Through the choking black smoke, ignoring the fresh burns searing my skin, I searched frantically for Beckett.
Then, his voice crackled from somewhere outside the burning mansion.
"Cass, Amber's mother’s keepsake is on the desk in my bedroom. Get it out of there."
Through the dancing sheets of flame licking the windows, I saw Beckett.
