Story

The story

Eight months pregnant, Miranda is dragged from her home by her husband Andrew and her parents, who want to force her into a caesarean so her umbilical cord blood can save her sister Marianne, who has leukemia. Miranda has just discovered their plan: Andrew married her only to harvest the baby, and her mother, an obstetrician, and her father, a hematology director, are complicit. She has already taken abortion pills and signed a divorce agreement.

As Andrew ties her hands and her mother slaps her, Miranda clings to the door frame, refusing to go. When the elevator opens, she spots Officer Burton, the neighbour who once helped her catch a thief, and tries to call for help before her mother covers her mouth.

Betrayed by everyone she trusted, Miranda must fight to protect herself and her unborn child from the family determined to sacrifice them.

Opening excerpt

Eight months pregnant, my parents, who had always been partial to me, asked me to go home for dinner. Suddenly, a fire broke out. My parents pushed me away and took my sister, who had leukemia, out.

Just when I thought I was going to die in the fire, my husband Andrew rushed in without hesitation and rescued me. He didn't even care about his own burns, but just looked at me with pity.
