The story
Mia Evans wakes in a hospital bed after a month-long coma, her face wrapped in bandages and a jagged scar running from her eyebrow across her nose. She remembers the camping trip her boyfriend Alex Thorne suddenly proposed, the drive deep into the mountains where the signal died, and the narrow rock ledge he urged her toward for a photograph. She remembers her husky Buddy bolting onto that ledge, the cracking sound, and the fall that killed him. And she remembers Alex kicking her over the edge.

I never should have agreed to go camping with my ex-boyfriend!
Lying here in this hospital bed, remembering what happened that day makes my eyes well up, and I still tremble with fear.
If I hadn’t brought Buddy with me, he wouldn’t have died.
I regret it so much!
I don’t know what got into him that day, but Alex Thorne, usually the most boring guy on earth, suddenly suggested taking me camping.
I thought, is hell freezing over? Since when did he get spontaneous?
I happily agreed, not really thinking about why he was acting so out of character.
