Story

The story

On her anniversary, Claire finds her car seat pushed forward and croissant flakes on the mat. Her husband Alex blames his cousin Nick, but Nick is too tall for the seat and allergic to gluten. Claire drives to The Gilded Spoon, where she meets Mia, the petite new intern Alex recommended. Mia boasts about a man who spoils her, and Claire notices her own vintage bracelet on Mia's wrist.

At home, Claire reviews closet security footage and finds Alex and Mia wearing her gowns, using her safe, and forging the deed to her late mother's condo. She also hears her best friend Chloe's voice, revealing Chloe helped lure her away so Alex could give Mia the deed. Claire calls her father to halt his investment in Alex's company and asks for a divorce attorney.

Claire must now confront the betrayal of her husband, her best friend, and the theft of her most precious possessions.

Opening excerpt

It was our anniversary, and all I wanted was a slice of cake to celebrate.

Instead, I found the driver’s seat of my car pushed all the way forward.

And on the floor mat, a delicate shower of croissant flakes.

I called my husband.

“Hey, has anyone else been driving my car?”

The hesitation in his voice was a story in itself. “Oh, yeah. My cousin Nick borrowed it yesterday. Why?”

His cousin Nick is six-foot-four, built like a linebacker. He wouldn't fit in my car with the seat pushed up to the steering wheel.
