Story

The story

Asher Blake once shared a hidden arrangement with Roman Pierce: Roman paid his tuition, and Asher slept in his bed. When Roman spoke of wanting marriage and children, Asher ended it on his own. Years later, Asher is a doctoral student whose advisor, Professor Miller, has lost the lab's funding and drags his researchers to a networking dinner to court a wealthy investor. The investor is Roman, now a formidable self-made tycoon. Under the pressure of saving the project, Asher must face the man he walked away from, and the old language of money and exchange returns.

Opening excerpt

I once had a secret, hidden relationship with Roman Pierce.

He paid for my tuition, and I slept in his bed.

Later, he told me he was at the age where he wanted to get married and have kids.

So, I unilaterally ended things.

Years later, we met again. I was accompanying my academic advisor to pitch him for a research investment.
