Story

The story

Clara has spent years as the woman Austin keeps waiting. When his childhood friend Amber needles her in the group chat about being a bridesmaid, Austin piles on, telling her not to be dramatic. Clara declines, because her own wedding falls on the same Memorial Day weekend, and the groom is not Austin. She mutes his furious messages and finishes her work instead.

At home, Austin is waiting after three months of silence, drunk and charming, certain a diamond ring and an apology can erase everything. He talks of winning his mother over and giving Clara the lavish wedding she deserves. Then he sees the simple band already on her finger.

He refuses to believe her, mocking her age and calling the wedding a desperate lie. Clara has already packed her suitcase, and the quiet in her heart tells its own story.

Opening excerpt

My friend Jessica was getting married over Memorial Day weekend, and our group chat was buzzing with frantic discussions about who would be in the bridal party.

Austin’s childhood best friend, Amber, suddenly dropped a message into the chat.

[Why don't we have Clara do it? She's got plenty of experience.]

Fiona, a close friend of mine, immediately tried to smooth things over: [Clara’s already been a bridesmaid three times. You know the old saying—four times is bad luck.]

But Amber wouldn't let it go.
