Story

The story

For six years, Elvira and Shawn have waged open and secret war. He forced her mother to fall from a building and become paralyzed; she leaked his secrets and bankrupted him. Everyone believed they would torture each other forever.

When they meet again at a class reunion, Shawn has made a comeback and is nearly engaged to the young, polite Thora. Elvira, calm and indifferent, wears a ring of her own. Yet Shawn's brother Jeff calls her Shawn's damn first love, and Shawn tells reporters he would dig out her eyes for his fiancée. Old wounds reopen, and the two fall into a bloody, disgraceful fight.

As police lights flash and statements are taken, Shawn begs Elvira to let each other go. She has already let him go once.

Opening excerpt

He forced my mother to fall from a building and become paralyzed and I leaked secrets, which bankrupted him.

Everyone thought we would torture each other for the rest of our lives.

When we met again, he had made a comeback and answered reporters’ questions with ease.

“Back then, a few of us classmates said, ‘Find someone you love by 18, get married by 25 and have a child before 28. Shawn, how far along are you?’”

“I’m almost engaged.”

“Then you’re the fastest among us here!”

I twirled the ring on my ring finger.
