Story

The story

David brings home a three-year-old girl named Mia, telling his wife Sarah that she will complete their family as a twin for their son Leo. His mother Brenda insists the child is an orphaned distant relative and that Sarah should simply raise her. Though Sarah refuses, Mia is legally added to their guardianship, and David begins treating the girl better than his own son.

When Mia suffers a febrile seizure, Sarah rushes her to the hospital, where a doctor helps them. David cuts his trip short and explodes at Sarah, blaming her for the emergency. His fury feels far too personal, and Sarah begins to wonder whether Mia is truly his daughter.

I assumed she was his illegitimate child, a secret he was trying to smuggle into our lives. So, I went behind his back and ran a DNA test.

I was wrong.

But when my husband found the results, the look on his face wasn't relief. It was terror.

My husband, David, and my mother-in-law, Brenda, came back from their "vacation" with a souvenir: a three-year-old girl named Mia.
