Story

The story

When her father-in-law Edward Smith's mouth twists to one side, Lucy Miller returns home dragging a sack of venomous snakes and scorpions. Her folk remedy is simple: soak the creatures in herbal alcohol, sit Edward in the tub for three days, and add acupuncture. The family freezes, but Emily claps and agrees, praising Lucy as the head of the family.

In a previous life, Emily recognized the stroke and tried to call for help. Edward shoved her down the stairs, and the family let her die. Now she says nothing while Edward soaks among snakes and scorpions, vomiting and slurring, as Lucy jabs rusted needles into his head and calls it detox.

Emily quietly photographs everything, smiling at the family that once let her die.

Opening excerpt

According to her, it was some kind of folk remedy. Soak the creatures in alcohol, let him sit in it, then give him acupuncture. In three days, he’d be as good as new.

When she explained it, the whole family froze. Some looked stunned, others outright terrified.

I was the only one who clapped my hands like I approved.
