On their sixth anniversary, a woman waits ten hours at a Colorado park-and-ride in a blizzard for her boyfriend, Mason, who never comes. He is a structural engineer working in the mountains, and she has taken one weekend off after twenty-six straight days of work to meet him. When the video call finally connects, it is her best friend, Tessa, sitting in his passenger seat, smiling.

Mason says he cannot leave Tessa alone on her first trip there, and his messages afterward are all about his own hard day.
