Story

The story

Sophia Hayes remembers dying: blamed for her brother James's death after their mother, Dr. Elena Hayes, refused to believe he had been shot, Sophia was pushed down a flight of stairs. She wakes on the very day James is shot in the library. This time she flees instead of calling for help, and returns home to her father's cold comparisons with Chloe, the adopted sister the family adores.

At City Central Hospital, the family gathers outside the operating room. Grandma Grace, Grandpa Frank, Grandpa Robert, Grandma Rose and her father all turn on Sophia, demanding she summon her mother. When Sophia calls, Elena dismisses her as a jinx and hangs up, busy diving for pearls with Chloe in Seaside City. A nurse warns that only Elena can perform the surgery.

As James's life hangs in the balance, the family's blame falls once more on Sophia, who chose to stand by and is still treated as the scapegoat.
