Too Late, You Let Her Go

Fresh out of grad school, Lavinia asks her boyfriend Paul Walker, a career planner, to help her map out a job search. He is always too busy, and calls her major worthless. When she moves her boxes alone, she sees a campus post praising him for planning the whole career of Janet Henson from the dance department.

She asks Paul for a strawberry cake; he says it is sold out, yet she watches him give it to Janet. She buys the blueberry cake she hates, eats it out of spite, and collapses from an allergic reaction. At the hospital Paul accuses her of acting and tells her to apologize to Janet.

With her parents gone and only two days left before her study-abroad deadline, Lavinia confirms the offer. She comes home to find Janet in her pajamas in Paul's arms, and resolves to ask nothing at all.
